Which one to buy? Where to buy? I bought and sold gbtc after holding for 3 days. Given that it is high premium, want to buy actual currency but not sure how to go about it. Opened a gdax account but folks here say it is not ideal. Also which is the best source to get knowledge on crypto currencies?

Even if I tell you something is good buy, you are not going to hold onto it for long term. If you do your own research, then you will be confident even during the down periods. After all, it really depends on how much you researched. For suggestions, just Google whatever coin interests you. Check what they are doing, who they are, do they really need to be decentralized, transparent, and immutable. Start with top coins first.
