Positive amazon Experience?

May 17, 2020 9 Comments

Hi all,

I'm considering a move to amazon for a Sr. PM role supporting Sort Centers (recruiter said I got the job but waiting on offer). I am however very nervous about the culture. I've done a lot of research and it seems like most people have a negative experience. I also know that generally people who post are the ones who are unhappy.

Do any of you have positive amazon experiences to share? A time when your manager supported you through a difficult personal time? Or when you were promoted or given a raise for completing a project? How about WLB? Does anyone enjoy an average 40-45hrs a week with free weekends? #culture #officelife #workplace

I’ve worked for Amazon so far for 2 years.

It’s like joining any massive company - it really comes down to which org, team, management, etc. You have to remember Amazon and AWS are massive - of course there will be a few unhappy people complaining online. It’s entirely possible to switch teams and move around at Amazon.

I work on a very high performance team - i would say I work no more than 45 hours a week unless I’m doing it intentionally(usually tinkering on the weekends). I find that it is a lengthy process to get promoted at Amazon however absolutely doable. I was assigned a mentor to essentially start helping with that process on day 1. I think the one thing I’ve found stressful but REALLY cool is Amazons ownership culture. I’ve been able to come into some MASSIVE projects and take complete ownership. I asked for it and got it. Stuff I’ll get to brag about the rest of my life. But it’s the stress of having a baby haha I think Amazon is an awesome company to experience working at. It’s high speed and intense in the right ways. It will accelerate your career. I wouldn’t want to try to make Amazon the company I retire at.

Been here a few months, work on average 35-40 hours a week. I think AWS is where those horror stories normally come from

Positive experience here in proserve. For example, my manager and I have very candid conversations on what my next steps are for growth and what I want (e.g. promotion or lateral moves/internal transfers, type of technology stack etc). We've been discussing what he is expecting of someone in the next level and provides me baselines (job role matrix) and things he wants to see to make it happen. We've been discussing options that would be great data points in a promo doc. He's supportive not only by just providing this type of help but also geniuenly interested in seeing me succeed. After all, success is a measure of both parties involved, but I am leading these conversations. Work/engagements are good. Usually get to choose the engagememt from the pipeline yourself and have it approved. Pre/post covid WLB is good too as we got to WFH a few days a week if we werent traveling to clients. Team is helpful and will jump in to help if you ask and are stuck on something.

Amazon for growing a career to make it to exec ranks in other places, FB for free food, Google for retirement with a darn good TC.
