I am currently L7 in Google Marketing managing 7 people, living outside the bay TC ~380k. Received a call from a recruiter at Coinbase who told me they are building out a new team and interested in me joining. Approximate package: -RSU: 200k yearly, vesting quarterly -Cash: 230k pay & bonus -Additional RSU based on performance Role is L7, currently IC as the team is being built under a newly appointed director. Current Google Pros - super comfortable in position - know the work and processes, know what levers to push for perf - carved out a unique position for myself where I have little to no competition Current Google Cons - limited growth, marketing is already really senior - allot of internal empire building that I care less to get involved in Questions - What is Coinbase like when it comes to marketing - What kind of growth opportunity exists - Would a potential move L7 to L7 be worth it
why not try it? could you boomerang in 1 year if you dislike it? (caveat: nowhere near L7 so no idea how hard it is to boomerang at that level)
Outside of eng I think it would be difficult. As soon as someone leaves in marketing, the team can switch the L7 HCfor three L3s so, most teams go down that route. Plus living outside NY or Bay area I have much less access to Google roles in marketing
Donāt leave for more than 2x current TC. You are lowballed.
Haha
380k for L7 at Google? Kind of low, no?
Marketing are on very different ladders than Eng Plus not in a premium or premium plus region
Personally I wouldn't consider it, though Kate Rouch is a solid marketer and will probably make a strong CMO.
Our culture sucks at coinbase. Not going to be as comfortable as google, financial upside is tbd at coinbase itās moved up and down a lot with Bitcoin price
Coinbase is full remote for tech .. how does it work with marketing folks though?
One of the things I should have mentioned in the post. I have been remote for a while (even before covid) manager is ok with it but I'll eventually have to go back to office
Coinbase is remote-first for all employees and the plan is to stay that way
Kate is awesome and this team is evolving, which you can help influence. Solid opportunity if looking for growth given how much hiring we'll do over the next few years.
I have friends in marketing who took a down level from large financial institutions. So keeping the same level from Goog in marketing kinda makes sense. However a lot of folks in product and engineering have taken L+1 roles, so you should push and see if the team would be open to upleveling you to D if the interviews go well. With the new CMO in place it looks like lot of cool things are happening on the marketing front, however before that my friends have expressed concerns around being in a founder led company and being constrained by how creative they can be.. maybe that's changing now..
Any insight about growth trajectories in marketing at senior bevels?
Any updates? Iām really interested in Coinbase and in google so would love to learn where things ended up.

Best LCOL or MCOL city?
I wouldnāt move for that kind of TC delta given the pros and cons you have listed. Stick around longer and look for a director role in a COIN class company or VP in a lower tier high growth one.
No upleveling here even when coming from Google š±
We used to uplevel folks from google but not anymore
