Current grad SWE internship hunt advice

Hi all, I am in grad school and I am looking to prepare myself for Summer 2020 internship positions in SWE (Backend/ML). Please validate my thoughts around this posted below and I’d be glad if someone answered my queries below them. My understanding: 1. Try to get an internship with FAAN(?)GMULA+, and possibly try to convert this to a return offer 2. Having referral helps (any protips around this is appreciated) Queries: 1. How important are resume templates? I have heard that a simple Word format works best because of different parsing engines. Is Latex-based template necessary for some organizations? 2. What are the best ways to apply for internships? (e.g. my school has career fairs, portals, referrals) 2.1. How do I maximize my chance of getting selected for an interview in these or at least get a foot in the door? 3. How much emphasis is placed on LCs? What other things matter (even to the tiniest extent)? Any general advice on preparing, applying and interviewing is appreciated. (?) - Netflix has NO internship positions out there? P.S: Top 10 CS school

You seem to be posing lots of questions that suggest you’re trying to game the system, which is a bad place to start. If you think your fate is determined by the file extension of your resumé, you are sadly mistaken. The best way to “maximize your chances” of getting your resumé pulled out of a pile is by... having the right words on your resumé? If your “top 10 school” has career fairs and you’re a graduate student, I’m very surprised you’re just asking about them now? Why would this not be your first option? Do you not suppose there will be FAANG companies which you desire present at these? Leetcode is for your own understanding of problem solving. Nobody should give a shit about this except you. Netflix only hires senior engineers.

Thank you for the reply. I apologize if my questions came across that way, that was not the intent and I agree that gaming the system is a terrible idea. To give a bit of context I'm not from the US so just getting a hang of how things work here and part of that is breaking down my misconceptions/misinformation around this that I might've been led to believe by fellow grad students/internet. My school has a career fair, and it would be my 1st option. I suppose some of the companies may not be present, from what I've gathered.

Go to resume workshops. Show your resume to an advisor and work through it together. Apply to as many places as possible. Your bound to hear back from at least a couple. Hearing back is the hard part. After that, just show them what you know through your interviews. Also, take a deep breath. You will get an internship and you will love it. The only people I knew from my uni (also top 10 CS) who don’t have internships are those who either didn’t apply or didn’t take it seriously. You’ll be fine.
