MS Contract v/s Pinterest Full time

Mar 19 11 Comments

I'm interviewing with several companies right now, and most of them are for full time roles. I have an offer for SWE L4 from Pinterest for around 170K CAD$ base, with 235K USD RSUs over 4 years and variable stock bonus up to max 165K USD. I also have a 12 month contract offer from MS for 100CAD$ / hour paid weekly and it is the actual amount that will arive in my own company account, with potential to get a full time offer at the end of it. The MS offer is looking better to me from the tax point of view and as "true" total compenation. Can someone convince me otherwise? #microsoft #pinterest #contractor #tech

  • MS contractors aren't treated well and often not converted to full time. I would go Pinterest 100% unless you want to be job searching in a year.

    • Yeah, I'm kinda aware that contractors aren't treated too well generally, but I was told to expect good W/L balance at my MS role. Do you have some specifics wrt contractors treatment?

My main interest is in increasing my cashflow income. Until y'all commented, I was thinking that *MS* was the no-brainer here because I'd be losing the minimum to tax since my own corp will be taxed differently compared to me individually.

Because of the taxes here in Canada, the Pinterest role will give me an annual net of approx 105K CAD$ while there'll still be some further taxes to pay for the vested RSUs, I'm thinking.

    • It's not like people will bully you, but you won't be treated as a real part of the team on most teams. You'll be handed work with limited scope and impact and kept segregated from most of the team.

I don't know the particulars of your situation or Canadian taxes, but picking short term MS cash over the long term value Pinterest will give you seems like a big mistake.

  • It's a no brainer to take the FTE Pinterest offer. There is no guarantee that your contract will convert - budget changes and reorgs happen all the time. And Microsoft FTE pay is much lower in Canada

  • Fte vs contractor with fte tc being higher. This is no brainer. Either renegotiate microsoft or take pins offer.

  • Pinterest for sure. At the very least, it's high TC and a FTE position. If you hate it, you can always get a FTE offer from Microsoft in the future.
