Hi guys I am an SDE1 for Amazon with 2.5 YOE.
Recently I got an offer from Uipath. TC is 135k base, 280k RSU / 4 years, 30k sign on, plus bonus is 262k TC per year. But title is SWE1. Recruiter told me hiring manager felt I am close to SWE2 but still have something to learn and note that Uipath is different from other companies, promotion is not that hard. I should be able to promote in half a year. I am not totally convinced but I assume I could promote in a year.
I just passed Google L3 HC(down leveled from L4 with 2.5 YOE) and start team matching process. Google recruiter asked my TC expectation. I said at least 260k I have a competing offer. He then asked me if I can show him the offer. I told him I can send him the formal offer letter if is needed. I heard that the TC bound for L3 in Google is 230k. If recruiter want to offer a greater number he needs VP's approval. Is it true or not?
Uipath is a unicorn which will go IPO next year. It is ranked 3rd place in Forbes 100, right after Snowflake and Stripe. https://www.forbes.com/cloud100/#11353c7a5f94 Looks like it is pretty promising.
Below are pros and cons I could figure out:
Google
Pros:
1. My dream company, want to own a Google badge for a long time.
2. Good WLB, could rest and vest. I am single now, need time to find a GF.
3. Google has good reputation. Looks good on resume if I want to reinterview for other companies later.
4. If I do not want to stay in US in the future I can relocate to other countries(China, Japan, Europe) as long as I can find a team.
Cons:
1. Slow promotion. I am 2.5 YOE now, taken average promotion time 1.5 years from L3 to L4. I will be 4 YOE when I got promoted to L4.
2. Stock does not have same potential as unicorn.
Uipath
Pros:
1. Stock has a good potential for IPO(could be another Snowflake).
2. Could be promoted to SWE2 in 0.5 - 1 year.
3. Large scope, have big impact projects to do. And it is good to have an IPO experience in career.
Cons:
1. Bad WLB. I saw many over time work on Blind reviews for Uipath(normal for pre IPO companies I think)
2. If Uipath can not go IPO for next few year, my base is low. (135k base + 20% bonus)
3. Uipath fired some people in 2019 when it faced some financial problems. I am on Visa now. The reason I want to leave Amazon is to find a company I do not need to worry about getting fired.
Current what I am thinking about is that if Google could match Uipath's offer I'll go to Google. Since Google is my dream company. Even though I know Uipath is actually a better choice for me.
So which company should I choose?
YOE 2.5 TC 150k
Update: Accepted the Uipath’s offer. Decided to work for Uipath first and waiting for IPO. At the same time keep team matching for Google. If Uipath go IPO in Q1/Q2 2021, Google’s offer will not expire at that time. Hope it could be next snowflake. 😆
