L4 Non-Tech Analyst currently up for L5 promo. Decent background/projects with Python, R, SQL, etc. and familiar with Spark, Hadoop, AWS design.

I'm looking to transition roles after I hit L5 and considering anything in the data job family. Should I take the time to LC harder and try for DE right away, or go the BIE route?

I don’t know what stcky-kbrd is smoking, but all my BIE friends have been doing just fine outside. Of course, the DE family pays more.

BI pay ceiling is very real, and I’ve never seen a >senior BI analyst/engineer. Career ladder is management, so unless there’s great soft skills, OP is pigeonholing themselves. DE->BI is easy. BI->DE not impossible, but is challenging and don’t expect top-notch TC in the transition.

And no 🔥 tonight, went for Lavagulin 😋

While there are principal BIEs, at a generalized level, you’re right. Management path sans soft skills is not the best.

BIE is like HIV. You’ll have good skills, but no other companies hiring for engineers will want to play with you.

    Go DE, Magic
