High performers, how often do you have slack off days?
Curious what DEV hardware setup, laptops are used at your companies? At MS we get a beefy Quad core with 16GB ram, 2 Tb drive with a SSD for OS drive. Typically you can get a 27" primary monitor with 2x24" for a triple monitor setup. Managers get a choice of laptop with surface, Lenovo, Mac Pro/Air (some teams), Asus, etc. Furniture: if you're not in shitty open space, you get a large L table, chair, both can be the ergonomic version if you get a dr. Prescription.
What else do you want?
Nothing, just want to compare
And then do what? Folks at yahoo get 1 laptop and 1 24" monitor. Will you take that instead? I guess not.
I work at home almost every day so I just bought 3 5k monitors
What kind of team are you on that lets you do that? Do the other members also wfh that often?
We just got some upgrades... Choice of a top of the line macbook pro or equivalent Windows laptop, a desktop or an ec2 instance, and then one curved 34 inch monitor or two 27 inch monitors.
Whoa!!!
Also, devs get an additional desktop that they often remote into. Trend is to have the desktop running in EC2 and you can pretty much choose whatever instance size you want
MacBook, SSH elsewhere for real work. I gave away my monitors after I realized I'm happier without them.
Dual Hexacore 144GB dev server. Whatever laptop you prefer.
Very cool!
Speak for yourself OP, I have 3 desktops all with at least 6 cpu and 32 gb ram.
Wow, can't wait for the PC refresh!
I have one desktop, i7 3770, 12 GB RAM, 750GB HDD, 100GB SSD. 3 dell monitors 1680x1050. No laptop. My PC refresh is coming soon.
Right now I'm using a top config MacBook Pro retina i7 16G, 512GB, and an EC2 based VM that has 16 CPU 64G RAM and some SSD which I don't remember since it doesn't matter. Monitor wise I chose two 27's over one 34'
Also if I want more VMs, they are a few clicks away.
i7 5820k, 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD, 2TB HD, GeForce 970, 2x 27" 4K monitors. At MS if you want good hardware, either work in a hardware oriented team, in games (such as myself), or buy it yourself.
Does the box matter? We do everything with a Mac laptop (state resides in the DC). Err, that doesn't work with Windoze, eh?
Let's keep the Windoze love aside for a moment, shall we :) So essentially you get a Mac laptop and have a server that you TS into for your DEV environment?
Yes.. ssh into a vm
