Leaving FB for Twitter in this economic environment... Crazy?

Apr 2, 2020 51 Comments

My current role at FB is safe and my TC is above average but the team I am in has a negative environment (politics, empire building, overzealous competition, etc). I am in the late stage of interviews with TWTR where it is known the exec in this space is on mission rather than on politics. I'm expecting a slight paycut but figure my sanity is part of comp as well.

However I'm not clear how well they are positioned to weather a deep recession. Any news on their health?

Go for it. FB is a a slowly sinking ship due to internal chaos, loss of customer trust, increasing competition from Amazon and tone deaf clueless leadership.

    Solid move to leave!

We have a decent amount of cash on hand so we should be able to weather the economic downturn just fine.

Lol TWTR is not safe at all. Did you miss the recent news where Dorsey barely managed to save his job from the activist investors? He is now on borrowed time, if TWTR doesn’t figure out a business strategy to become strongly profitable in the next year, the investors will make them profitable, via cost reductions. The founders do not have special voting shares and cannot protect the company.

  • I wouldn't recommend it in this environment. Twitter pulled all future Q1 guidance and is being pressured by a hedgefund. They've had major layoffs before.

The hedgefund issue is resolved and the Q1 guidance was also pilled by all ads companies including FB. FB projected drop in revenue if things get really bad (Q3 unemployment at 20%+ is projected).

It was not “resolved.” Dorsey and TWTR got a stay of execution. Note that they had to give up board seats to the hedge fund. What do you think they are going to do with those board seats, if Dorsey doesn’t figure out how to make real money?

This thing passes the gramps’ test: would you like to be able to tell your grandchildren about this move? I say yes. It’s exciting. A lot of comments up here are from TC maximizing folks, or promo oriented people.

See what matters most to you OP.
