YOE: 12
TC: 400k, SF
M1 at FB and L6 SDM at Amazon
$500-$550k range offers

I know everyone on Blind keeps talking about Amazon ratings being low for employee satisfaction and Facebook being one of the best options. 2 of my good friends work at Amazon (both IC) and they don’t complain at all of being at Amazon.

Personally I am looking at doing core work in computers and have a deep technical impact - even as an SDM/ M1.

I am really put off by Zuck’s two-sided stand on core matters that makes me thing it’s all for show. I don’t know if I can look up to him as an exec leader.

But then there are the reviews and ratings!

Take FB, if you don’t like it run to the media and produce a propaganda piece why you’re quitting

Yes it's the same at Netflix. Amazon wants all new joiners to raise the bar, ie by being better than 50% of current employees at same level. Only way to keep that up is losing bottom performers

New joiners dont raise the bar though. We just say they raise the bar on lps but theres no objective wat to measure that.

The team and org is likely more important than the company when you are starting at the M1 level, but dollar for dollar, FB offer is better. At Amazon, the only way your comp will increase from the 500k level (which is already above band for L6) is getting an L7 promo, which is hard. You will need a large team, to manage managers and increase scope to get there. Written communication skills and delivering results from your team, and showing strong technical instincts will be critical to positioning yourself for L7. At FB, impact within your team is the metric of choice. I am less familiar with what it takes to move from M1 to M2 at FB but guessing it is similar. The one difference is you will get true refreshers at FB and your comp will grow independently from the stock price fluctuations, where at Amazon only stock price increases and promos will drive your comp up from there. So financially, FB is a better choice. But if the technical opportunity, scope, and team/org setting at Amazon are better, go for it. I took the leap and took an L6 SDM offer at Amazon almost 4 years ago, have moved to L7, had a ton of impact, and driven by comp to more than 3x what it was when I joined, so it can work out very well if you are smart, tough, and a great communicator.

You should read up on the Amazon comp system on Blind. No, your comp in general will not increase on promo if you are already in the band for the new level. 800k is reserved for top tier L7s and external hires, so you need to go through at least one annual review cycle first to get there post promotion.

This app is biased against Amazon to an unrealistic degree. Amazon has problems but the hate is a meme.

There will be and I think these people are already L6 and above. They get good pay, respect and less competition. It's worse for L5 for so many reasons and risk.

I'm L6 at Amazon and love it. Great manager, great team. Only reason I'll leave is promo to L7 seems impossible

Based on the work at Amazon, not a significant monetary difference in comp, my communication being above average(apparently is important at Amazon), having senior SDEs on the team (I don’t expect to do much handholding) so I can get time to be technically involved... I have chosen to join Amazon.

It was a difficult decision, (and I am going against a lot of you) and I think my heart says I can make a mark on technology.
