Getting used to Seattle area - tips

Jan 17 138 Comments

Hey, just moved to Seattle from Mid west.

Feeling more depressed with lack of light and rain. Most importantly I miss sunlight.

Don’t know anybody here and difficult getting used to the darkness here. It’s more darker and stays darker. Gets dark earlier too.

Used to rent bigger place but here apartments are so cramped and smaller even for 2.1K.

long hours at work too. feeling more stressed . New to big tech culture here.

Do people get used to this? Will things get better. Anything else I can do get through this? Introverted.

I see vitamin D helps? Any good lighting recommendations? Rain coats? Any better apartments in Bellevue area?

Been here for two years and half already and still not used to it. Had making like minded friends been easier I wouldn’t have found the city as nearly depressing but it seems like a place that only vibes with certain types of people and you will feel lonely if you are not one of them…thinking about leaving but no idea where I should move to 😭

Really? Why more trouble dating in SF? I’ve had no luck finding my Mr Right in seattle after two years of trying and thinking of moving there actually

Fwiw and since it may not be clear in my post above, I’m also not white and haven’t had a problem dating and making friends in Seattle.

  • It doesn’t get any better till summer. Get used to it. Things to try- make more friends, try not to think about the rain or gray clouds, join a gym. Was in the same boat but ended up going remote and moving out to a sunnier place, was definitely impacted due to the gloominess.

Go to work early and end work early so you can return home while there is still a good amount of sunlight

  • Moved here 5 years and things have gotten progressively worse - esp over the pandemic. I am not an outdoorsy hiking person. I like to hang out with friends and lounge about and Seattle has been the absolute worst place to do that. I have a couple friends but they are constantly out hiking on weekends and weekdays until they drop dead tired(I can understand that they are doing to avoid feeling depressed). Even a casual trip like going for a walk involves wearing layers, hats and heavy duty socks. The summer is nice, yes but nothing helps with 6-7 months of grey depressing rain. So I have finally decided to move to California. I used to live in SD and Bay Area for close to 8 years and honestly I badly badly miss it now. Never leaving California again. EVER. Sorry OP- hope you find friends and find your jam in Seattle. Definitely leaving the house to go for walks(rain or shine) helps a bit. Try to live in a more happening neighborhood. I know the city is stupidly expensive but living in cap hill or belltown for sometime will make u feel less lonely. Good luck !!

I also don’t get why people have so many problems hanging out with their friends in Seattle. The main issue we have is matching up schedules because we’re all having a good time with our various things. Isn’t that a good thing? Why do so many people here want their friends to do everything with them and be into everything they’re into? What do you talk about when you get together? Do you all want to live in episodes of Friends? This isn’t university where there’s always people just waiting for something to do.

As far as hanging out goes, if you don’t want to have your friends over to your place (not sure why) there are so many places to hang out. There are coffee shops on pretty much every other block or boba or a bar or good restaurants.

If Seattle is not for you, I hope you find a place that is and yes, please leave. It’s not fun listening to people who live where you live and hate it. Go find your happiness.

But I do agree that Seattle and PNW scenery is breathtakingly beautiful. And it takes a ton of rain to keep it that way. I just want nothing to do with that rain on a daily basis. I’ll come visit when I want to see how beautiful everything is
