Split between buying 30k car vs Tesla(60k). Let’s not compare how nice it drives or luxury. Trying to get some opinions on is it really worth it to get Tesla to save money on fuel? To me all fuel savings are eaten up by 20k upwards I am paying upfront. I am of the opinion that buy Tesla if you like to drive it but not for saving money on fuel, which is contrary to friends’ suggestions.

Don’t buy. Buy cheap and invest money in s&p. Buy 60k car after 5 years with that profit. All electric cars will come with better batteries then.

  • If you’re going for a 30k car, go with the Tesla model 3 SR without the FSD. The price is 35k (+taxes which you’d anyway pay on the other cars). You’ll have about 1.5-3.5k rebate based on income and whether you’re in California. You save about 1k/year in gas money (in Cali and if you drive more than 10k) and about 800$ on average in tolls if you’re in Bay Area. Plus almost no servicing cost. If you’re in California, especially Bay Area, instead of a 30k iC car, go for 35k Tesla. Just in 3 years your costs will come down to 28-30k.

It won't save you 20k. It gets even worse if you count the potential return on the 20k invested in the market.

  • You won’t save money. It’s a great car though.

It should be pretty easy to convince your friends with trivial arithmetic: assuming lifetime of 10 years, Tesla will need to save you 166/mo, which is higher than I spend on gas most months.
Where I live, that would give you 70 gallons of gas, or, assuming 25 mpg, 1736 miles traveled per month.
