I have 2 years of sales experience and I really want to get into data science. Any tips on how to go about doing this? I know very little SQL so I started there by taking a free course online but what else should I be doing? Are online courses even the way to go? I’m considering going back to school for a bachelors in Comp Sci or MIS
Start learn SQL and python. You can ask same question on Rooftopslushie.com as well.
Everyone's going to tell you to be a data scientist. That's silly. A good data analyst spends their time figuring out how to make a business more money, the potential advancement through the business side of things can pay much better. Anyway, try it out, maybe you like business analytics, maybe you like data science, there's lots of paths
^this. It’s funny how people nowadays think the more technical the better, and how CS is DA BEST. Lol.
Data analyst is a good career path. keep learning...it could open up more doors such as data engineer if you wanted
As it said, a data scientist is an statistician that knows how to code. It is very different from a data analyst. Now, if you are really serious, you should go back to school, and depending on the level of sophistication that you want, go for CS, math, stats, or data science
Tbh if you learn SQL that alone should open doors- and I don’t mean just basic queries. If you can write complex scripts that are well-tuned you can easily pivot to the statistical side/data science, sysadmin work, or data eng. Don’t get too ahead of yourself.

Data analysis is just drawing fancy charts and drafting reports. If you are willing to go for a CS degree there is so much more you can do, even in analytics as a data engineer
This^. If u like data analysis your goal should be data scientist. Start with datacamp. Take the python data science track. Also keep learning SQL. However if u like building things and have the time I highly suggest going CS dégrée route. Like buttnpushr said, lots of stuff to be done as data engineer. I highly believe data engineering will become more important than data science over the coming years
Thank you both for your advice here. I’m looking for something that can get me to the next step in my career within the next 2 years so I thought data science would make sense since I enjoy analytics and excel. I’m going to look more into CS and how it fits into my long term goals.
