Data Analyst/Scientist in Gaming

What does the daily work of a data analyst in the gaming industry look like? How much machine learning do you need to know?

In my experience, it's pretty basic and way less machine learning than other domains. The daily work is typically answering ad-hoc queries, AB testing, building dashboards and pipeline and creating analytics specs for new features or a new game. Sometimes, you can do fancy stuff like churn predictions, spender predictions but in terms of decision making and implementation it's not always helpful and can be done by exploratory analysis and domain knowledge. There are very few cases where advanced analytics was used to do something really meaningful.

thebobb's description above is true in most cases. If you're interested in ML, the two areas of gaming that tend to use it more are research divisions at the large companies (AB, EA, Riot, Tencent) or at companies that are not strictly game makers per se but provide platforms for gaming companies (Unity, Twitch, ad platforms).

Thank you!

I am yet to experience high level of machine learning, but apart from dynamic pricing and dynamic difficulty do you see any use case where it is actually required? Thanks.

You want to leave Netflix to be an analyst in gaming? Do you not like money?

Gaming companies are about 5 years behind in all tech, other than rendering engines ;)
