What are uber guidelines/rules for attending conferences as a ds? Budget? Limit per year? Expectations etc
I think there is a budget of roughly 1-2k per person per year. But honestly not that many people take advantage of it or even know about it.
How are teams structured?
DS sit on product teams and mostly report directly to other DS managers, not usually report to PMs. Although PMs do usually determine projects for DS with their requests. A DS manager will often look to the PM counterpart of the DS to evaluate them.
How important is it for your perf review to have direct product impact? Are you more of a consultant or are you expected to convince PMs/EMs to make changes?
Product impact isn’t generally taken into account for perf. It’s more of how good a job you did at assessing the impact certain changes had (experimentation) and also using data before products are built to help determine which changes might lead to which results. I personally see it as more of a consultant role, PM and EM will dictate, but they ask a DS for validation or to answer questions beforehand.
Training and background? Yoe?
2 yoe. Business undergrad degree->tech consulting->DS
How different is your work from SWE in ML? Who has the higher compensation?
Very different. We do some ML but they obviously do more. They don’t have to write queries or ETLs as often as we do. We don’t build production systems, our final results are just insights and slides. Comp of the engineer is probably higher.
(Not specific to DS) How open is Uber wrt moving between roles? I am considering to interview for a backend SWE. Will it be possible to move to ML SWE later on?
Does every team have a DS person directly on it? Do you guys look down on analytics members?
Mostly every product team has a DS if it makes sense. The teams that don’t are really small or just build some kind of internal platform that just may not need analysis. And wait why would DS look down on someone doing analytics? Isn’t that what we do?
How many queries you write everyday?
Check out G-Eazy’s “lotta that” and you will know.
Can you hire me? But for real, do you contribute to the Uber engineering blog? Because there’s some really cool stuff on there
