I've worked in analytics for the past 4 years and I've enjoyed it, but it doesn't quite feel like the perfect fit. My favorite part of my job is the build (making a really cool dashboard with complex excel formulas, building python scripts to grab data from the reddit or twitter apis etc, working with the backend of CMSs to build sites/apps). Basically, it seems like I really like the "building" aspect of my job. After talking it out with friends, it seems like I would get to do more of this in the computer science field. I currently have a BS in Economics - I'm highly considering going back to school for a couple of years to get a BS in Comp Sci. I think I'd want to work on the backend side of things, which is why I think it makes more sense to go back to school rather than try to work my way in. Am I on the right track here re: what my job could be like and needing to go back to school? I'm 27 so I feel like I still have enough time to pay off any debt I'll acquire. Tc: 78k Yoe: P.s. Yes I am aware my TC is low for my role (data analytics) and my location (SF). I here about this in the comments of literally all my posts :)
Never get a second BS. Get an MS if you must. Be aware the CS degree program will be mostly theory. It sounds like you enjoy the application. Interviewing internally for SWE would be the way to go at a company like Facebook. Saves the hassle of a degree program.
Consider doing a dev boot camp instead?
Do you recommend a specific one? Seems like hack reactor has the most consistently good reviews
Think of the opportunity cost of going back for the comp sci degree.
Yeah that's what makes me hesitant - the tuition, time spent out of the work force
Fellow Econs in a very similar situation though, good luck! Iโm 27yo w/ bs in Econ too
Transition to a data engineer. Most data engineers come from similar backgrounds
Wow - I'd not heard of this type of role. It actually seems like a perfect fit
Agreed, BI sounds a bit like what you describe....
Leetcode, internal transfer.
Only get a second BS if your company will pay for it, go part-time. Former college who was a data analyst did this to get a 2nd Bach in CS. Worked out great for him & heโs excelling in his career now. No debt.
Ah cool!

Can you get a SWE job in your current company? Thatโs generally the way to go about a change like this with the most ease.
Unfortunately I work at a marketing firm so SWEs aren't a part of anything we do
