Asking for a friend who has a verbal offer for a Director of Data Science position at a public tech company in SF. Friend has a statistics PhD plus 5 years of experience in academia + consulting for businesses. Wants to know what to ask for total compensation, including how/what to negotiate for a relocation package from the East coast. TIA!
A director at Facebook / Google / Lyft Uber / Airbnb make close to 1M. Most of those people manage teams of 25+ and have more that 5 YOE.
Title inflation is rampant these days, many companies use “director” to mean manager, rather than head of a self contained logical unit of significant size. It could simply be a team of 5 or so, working on whatever is needed by the business rather than “all of data science”.
With 5 YOE and a PhD you are a team lead or manager, not a director. If you are interviewing for a "director" role, the company is trying to get you to manage a small team and pay you with a title instead of cash and RSUs. I would guess 250k.
