Do data scientist get paid more/less/equal on average with SW related roles in the Bay Area? Any real life data science TC examples ?

Afaik, a weaker SWE new grad offer and DS new grad offer are pretty close, but as a SWE climbs the ranks the pay grows much faster in SV tech companies that can afford big packages.

E.g. at a certain fintech unicorn, a 4 YoE SWE from a bootcamp got an offer with 50% more RSUs than a 6 YoE PhD DS, both same base. 4 YoE undergrad DS had 1/2 the shares and a much lower base.

E.g. FB L5 engineer IIRC makes more than a L6 DS, going off Blind.

SWE is a bit less lucrative outside the bay. E.g. at GS, it's pretty close lol, because everyone is paid very little. I also hear FB is giving much lower offers in NYC for SWE, not sure how true that is.

Thanks for the insight !Where can you compare salary on blind between FB L5 and L6 DS? Sorry I’m new to this app!

I waste lots of time reading and commenting, so I come across people claiming these things. More efficient would be to Google search the blind website.

Based on Glassdoor, data scientists earn more as a market average. (And I thought I also read that they earn more as a median.) But based on comp.fyi, software engineers earn more at big tech companies (i.e. the top 10% of the pay scale).

Thanks for the info. I’m trying to break into that field and that base salary range.

In the Bay Area, the average DS base/bonus is similar to SW, but RSU is about 50-60% of SW. So SW makes more. With an MS or PhD with 5-10 YOE, an average DS makes about 180/30/50-70 ~ 260-280. Once you move outside of the Bay Area (excluding New York), then it becomes harder to compare. Too many variables. Just know that in the Bay Area, SW > DS (almost always).

I’m curious if $200k is not far off in terms of base salary for an average Data scientist.
