Data scientist that cannot code. When did this happen?

Last I interviewed for data scientist role about 5 years ago I was asked a lot of coding questions, along with stats and algorithms. This time around I have not been asked to code, except SQL, in a single tech screen it onsite. No algorithms either.
When did it happen that data scientists are not expected to code anymore? Who develops new stat methods and algorithms for companies and does prototyping now?

Sounds to me like they're evaluating your critical thinking skills and not your coding skills which sounds correct to me.
