Should I leave my job in non SaaS/Cloud industry for an 84k SDR role at Databricks? I’m currently at 130 TC but want to build my career in cloud/SaaS.

Don’t switch from AE > SDR. Take the shortest path to being an AE, network your way into SMB there. Not worth the step back there are way to many good companies to sell for rn.

If SDR > SDR, consider how much extra time as an SDR this adds.

What kind of sales are you currently doing? How different is it from SaaS? Next time they push back, ask what concerns they have with your sales experience and what they view differs in SaaS. Some good objection handling here might get them to take a chance on you as a SMB/commercial rep.

Telecom. It’s not worth the wasted time and opportunity of interviewing. Ive already addressed it during interviews but they truly want experienced SaaS folks in these roles. It’s not worth the wasted time and multiple rounds only to lose out because of this reason. Ive made it to final rounds at the companies mentioned above only to have consistent feedback regarding “lack of SaaS industry experience”

  • There are a lot of good SaaS companies hiring for BDR/SDR role right now... you may want to ask about career paths for SDRs at Databricks and what that looks like

I’m assuming a year in the role before progressing to AE or EAE

    • You’ll likely go from bdr to commercial sales. I don’t see any bdrs jump to enterprise even with previous non tech sales roles

  • Yes, Databricks will catapult your resume even if you’re starting at sdr and can grind it out to be an AE. Long story short, if you’re willing to grind, it’ll pay off

This is great. Do you know from personal experience?

    • I’ve been a bdr, 8 years ago and now do enterprise sales. I was not a bdr at Databricks, but I have a bdr at databricks and know they have high expectations, but good opportunity if you’re willing to work. You can take this to GCP, AWS or Microsof, or another cutting edge start up.. pave your way wherever you want if you’re successful here

I’m in sales now but upside with databricks is far higher than my current company.

    • I say yes, people on blind may disagree but if you can be comfortable with the paycut and see a larger upside within your career longterm and potential to either jump jobs or get promoted to back to your current tc in ~1-2 years its worth AND also dont think/want to risk getting a more competitive offer in SaaS then yes its a good call. Need to build that resume somehow yeah?
