Db2 DBA - looking for best career choices

This friend of mine is working as a DB2 DBA in a financial institution for 3 years now.. he is sick of it and he feels like there is no way out. He tried switching to Software Engineer but most don't even call for interviews given his career switch. He is great at data structures.. He knows core java but since he hasn't worked in that technology he doesn't know any frameworks in it.. what is a good career choice for him to switch?
