I am currently applying for work while working full-time. I am utilizing LinkedIn to apply. I see alot of people and recruiters have pronouns in their headers. I personally find it pretty lame. I suspect that many of the recruiters into that.

Why do people put pronouns in their bio? Are people being fake and virtue signaling?

Would it be beneficial to my career to pretend to woke in tech?

  • if this isn’t a troll post and you actually cannot understand why listing preferred pronouns in a professional setting is good… you should stay away from recruiters who list pronouns since you are a poor cultural match and maybe kinda dumb tbh

When I see someone of unambiguous gender identity state their pronouns, I automatically start taking them less seriously. It's such an NPC thing to do

How is asking to be called how you want to be called woke?

If you’re name is, let say hdkakakzndjs, and you want people to call you Bob, you put Bob in your header.

    Also TC or gtfo.

I have my pronouns to make things easier for people. It seems dumb when the gender is obvious, but it doesn't hurt anyone, so it's whatever. Why would something so small bother people.

    • I think virtue signaling is a pretty real thing. I'd say it's probably still net neutral, but don't think it's really a great thing (e.g. if I know someone who puts pronouns but is extremely homophobic in private, that's still pretty bad, hence disingenuous).
Recruiters who do it because they were told to/to appear better to candidates as external facing employees is also in this camp of neutral with questionable intents.
Same thing as when mega corporations celebrate pride week etc. They're doing it because it boosts their profits, and only a portion of them walk the walk. I think it's two faced but agree that generally it's not harmful and hence reasonable. (to be clear I'm not disagreeing with you)

No worries. I didn't think you were agreeing or disagreeing. I wasn't disagreeing with you either, just never knew some people had strong feelings about pronouns (outside of Twitter).
