Looking back, there were some smart and not so smart moves for software industry professionals to take their careers. Dedicating your time to becoming the number 1 Adobe Flash developer is not one of the smart moves. Desktop applications have seen a hefty decrease with web based applications replacing a lot. ERP can be argued to be such a costly investment, I would argue that it is dying if not dead. Even virtual reality, such a promising technology that has been shown off by Facebook even and Oculus but has never really taken off mainstream. Instead, look at Augmented Reality, with huge players dropping billions to get into the game to be first to market* (with mass appeal that makes our lives easier, not just a gimmick). How about AI, ML, crypto/blockchain, web services. You get the point. Tell us, what do you think is the industry or specialization that technology professionals should focus on, and why? I.e. is it machine learning that is going to have a huge concentrated popularity and importance? Or should devOps switch specialities due to CI/CD trends? If you could visit the future, what would you tell yourself today, “Self, drop everything and become the leading expert in <specialty> and you will not regret it”
Teach yourself how to learn something fast. Technology will always be changing and there’s always the next new hot tech to learn. If you can learn to learn fast, you can rise up as soon as you identify the hot tech.
Amen
Totally. Also, just be open to change and be willing to jump on a bandwagon here and there, even if you think it's dumb. Staying relevant sometimes requires that you follow the crowd.
AI/ML has already kicked off and probably continue to rise. Don't forget IoT
What r the best ways to learn AI, machine learning and blockchain?
Systems programming, distributed systems, NOC design still has a 40 yr future. Until someone releases NOC-in-a-box. AI (the CS snake oil discipline) specifically neural networks is a fad that gets hot every 25 years and then Fizzles out. We are currently in the fizzle out phase, 3rd AI revolution. Next fake AI revolution is in 2045.
What is your evidence that ML is fizzling out?
Cobol. The world will forever run on it. The world fears change.

Blockchain, ai no brainer
Being an expert in blockchain sounds similar to being an expert in quicksort.
Yup. Two square pegs to fit all round holes.
