Decide between facebook & twitter (BayArea)

Oct 16, 2019 21 Comments

Have following offers facebook & twitter to join as a senior software engineer. Live in peninsula so commute would be similar time wise.

Facebook E5 - Base:200k, bonus:15%, RSUs: 650k, signon:75k - TC: 392k
Facebook will join bootcamp.

Twitter Senior: Base:200k, bonus:20%, RSUs: 530k, signon: 25k - TC: 372k
Twitter offer is in specific team. Hiring manager is really interested in me joining the team and highlighted giving opportunities to grow to staff level.

Current TC at Workday: 285k
YOE : 12

    Come to FB :)

I was in similar position some time back. Two points I hope can add some value to you (Full disclosure: My perspective will obviously have some bias. I do hope you will join us at FB!)

    1. TC: First, that’s a really solid E5 package so congrats! FB TC is already slightly higher and FB explicitly has refreshers that is top of industry so the gap will only increase. For reference, an E5 on average will receive 120k worth of refreshers per year, all the way up to 360k a year for stellar performance.

    2. Lateral move to future opportunities: Twitter has title inflation that industry aggressively adjusts for. A colleague chose Twitter and loved his experience while there but didn’t have much leverage when companies across the industry forced a down-level. In contrast, I’ve seen most coworkers at FB able to move to another company laterally, including to Google quite often, or even be up-leveled 1. A year at FB then to Twitter may be a faster career path.

Both are great options and companies though. Lucky problem to ponder!

Do you live in sf or south bay? Feel like that should be a big part of your decision

We certainly have some internally promoted engineers with only 3-4 years of experience at E5 but they’re usually very strong engineers who survived through FB’s cutthroat eng culture and pressure half after half, no easy feat; for better or worse, it’s really a side effect of FB aggressively letting go or managing out internal SWE’s not on that accelerated path (i.e. hard promotion period requirement).

The company average is actually quite a bit higher, especially as we’ve hired more from outside recently.

Solid offers! Recently joined Twitter (NYC), chose over FB and Dropbox. Having an amazing experience so far, surrounded by super motivated and smart coworkers (not just the engineers). The food is spectacular, the culture is awesome, terrific WLB!

By the numbers it seems like FB is better but at the same time, you don’t know if Twitter will be more helpful for growth in the long term
