Hey Sw folks This is a hw engineer , aka modern world peasant. I have been working at intel for 2 yrs. 30 yrs old by the way Working for intel was a big dream for me while i was in grad school as they have one of the best tech in my field. I had no idea about how much sw peeps make but oh boy do i feel bad now. I mean CS is a hard field, i get that, but seriously though, EE was hella challenging for me too! Busted my ass in a top 10 grad school for my field With RSU,base, bonus i barely make 110k!! And this seems to be the case for other chip companies like ARM, Qualcom, Marvel, AMD. When I see the SW folks living in a nice crib, being a millionaire in five years while even fresh grads make more than my manager I seriously am starting to not give a fuck about my work. My manager makes less than 200k, however making 200 seems to be a joke in Sw. I envy you guys.
2 yrs into your career and talking like it’s the end of the world. Learn SW things. You got time.
We hire hardware people too or just go SWE. It’s not that hard.
I think if you are passionate in what you do, more money cannot really make you happy. But yes, money talks!
Yeah. But with that money you cant buy a decent crib in a decent school district now days. I need an engineer lifestyle. Didnt bust my ass to live a mediocre life
What people are telling you is that your attitude is coming off as self-pitying and inert. You can become a dev in 9-18 months if you want to. Your pay is good enough that you can afford to take time off and learn + pay for a bootcamp. If you're sad because you have to learn more new things, you're not going to get any sympathy.
Never count another mans money.
So hard not to when you see all these ppl living a different lifesytle
Preach on @Boxdrop
I am in embedded systems and write code for 5G software and drivers and making close to ~190-220 K TC in a cheap city Boulder. I have a 5 bedroom mansion. I am very happy not to be in SF even if it pays me double.
NVDA 🤑🤑🤑🤑
That’s cool bro.... I live near one of SD beaches and happy with TC 180 K. It’s much cheaper than SF and allows me to surf everyday before work 🏄♀️
180k in sd ... do you own a house or do you rent?
I own a house away from beach. But living with my girlfriend on rent currently paying 1800 for a giant 2 bedroom house, 1 mile from beach. Life is not bad at all. No complains currently except our company stock price. If it didn’t sunk past 2 years because of 🍎, then I could be more richer lol 😂
OP, where do u live?
Portland area
Well, Portland isn't insane like SV, you are still presumably in the top 5% vs an average Joe! See the +ve side of things, just saying in a different light..
I have an EE degree and am now a SWE. In my past job I worked at a mid size startup that was building systems that had hardware and software. I worked on FPGAs and little by little moved up the stack there. I now work writing C++ code full time and my TC is 280-300k depends on the value of the stock on a given day
I worked at that midsize startup for 4 years before this gig. I’ve been here for over 2 years and my como has gone up 30% in those 2 years. My advice to you is find a smaller company where you can move freely up and down the stack
Thats pretty cool. Did you learn algo and DS back in college or you had to learn everything ur self?
Switch job.
