Design Challenge Product Interview - Resources / Help?

Apr 30 13 Comments

I've been asked to do a design challenge for an interview. I'm newer to Product (1 year) but my resume suggests longer because I've been working in the tech space in general for 5 years (customer support)

I've never done a Design Challenge, and most of the online stuff I've seen is for designers and not PMs. I'm very nervous. Any tips or recommended cases?

Can you be more specific about what you mean by Design Challenge? Did the company give you any details on what this interview would entail? Is it a case study / take home assignment or is it a live interview?

Giving us the name of the company might help as well

If it’s 3 hours long then it will likely be pretty in depth. Could involve actually doing some research on the problem and working through it with a team

Appreciate your help mJY - it was a bit unstructured but went surprisingly well. I was open about what I was not sure about with respect to their expectations and we collectively figured it out as we went.

Your replies really calmed me though, and thank you for being so responsive

Also, 3 hour!? Red flag. They don’t know what they want or if their design challenge is related to their product, they’re looking for ideas

I am OK w spending time on any ideation that’s not related to their product. That’s a sign they’re really after your thought process

It ended up being a bit unstructured, and they also asked for feedback about the interview itself. I get the impression it was more about them being new to interviewing than trying to squeeze work out of me

Product Design Qs are generally “design X for Y”

Ex. Design ride hailing app for the blind

Maybe a dumb question, but would it be reasonable for them to ask me to wireframe? I have never done that

Simple wireframes, yes. A complex mock up, no. Most places expect Product Managers to be able to do simple wireframes. A wireframe is often one of the best ways to communicate your vision or thought process to the UX team or designer for collaboration. It you’ve never done a wireframe before then I would look up some short demonstrations on the process
