DevOps vs Product

I need to choose between a DevOps role or an emerging product development role. Which one would help me in my career in the long run. I have not worked on DevOps much, stuff is new to me, out of my comfort zone.

Depends where you want to grow. If willing to be big VP, if the product is for product marketing. I would go for it.

If "product development" in your OP is "software engineering", then that's a better idea. DevOps will likely get highly automated in the next 10 years.

Yes, product development, I meant software engineering.

What do you mean by devops? SRE at Google is a SWE role and they hire SWE’s for it,

CarGurus ak1011 OP Feb 2, 2019

Stack upgrades, build pipelines, framework to roll out new services etc. There is no direct involvement with the business.

If you have a choice, go for the development role. You need to know what DevOps does. They do far less than what Sys Admins, DBAs, Web Masters did in the past, but faster and in large volume. Would you have picked any of those roles?

I think if you do a short tour in devops you’ll be highly marketable for the short term and slightly more marketable long term. Your promotions will always be better working on product but there are companies who’s products are the devops stuff.

Could you help me understand a little more on how would the short tour make me more marketable ?

Devops is the current buzz everyone wants people with the skills. You can get a few fancy dinners out of recruiters, have top companies calling you etc. It will change to something else within a few years though. That’s how these things work. The work will still be there but it won’t be the current hotness

product, no question. never mind. i see you have no clue. doesn’t really matter. you are too green. either will be a good step

CarGurus ak1011 OP Feb 2, 2019

What do you mean, you are too green?

too noob. you didn’t even ask a proper question. it literally doesn’t matter at this level of experience. either path is a good start and can morph into the other.
