Product Managers usually stay close to the business leadership and get to steal your share of pie and even earn a bigger pie for themselves.
On the other hand Product Managers get a badge of honor. You will be known in the product developers community as someone who gets stuff done. You will be adored everywhere you go. But always remember - Badges are not financial rewards.
And honestly, getting held accountable for the actions/delays/shortcomings of your team can be really frustrating.
As an alternative to PM, organization often keep another similar position with less people management overhead, a position of an architect. That's where you still get to do more of your developer stuff & less time putting nose in people's work.
