Hello,

Just wanted to check your thoughts as to how one should go about setting expectation for the job level or band at FB. For context, I recently (Feb 5) went through a recruiter screen at FB for PM job. They mentioned that I am being progressed to the initial interview. The process is for a "Product Manager". After doing my homework, I sent an email to the recruiter about my expectation for the job level. I asked for 7 (which per my research is a reach but not unrealistic) not knowing what level is the recruiter looking at. In our recruiter screen, they only asked if I was looking for a people mgmt job or IC or both (I said I am fine with either, would prefer non IC though). In the email, I asked for what their thoughts were on the job level. Since then, they have gone quiet. I sent 2-emails over the last week. One with my expectation and the second thanking them for sharing a FB mock interview meeting link.

My questions:

a. Do you think they are likely to stop the process at this point altogether if they find expectation misaligned? Or communicate what level they see my as fit and then check if I am still interested to proceed?
b. I have heard 7 and above are 'leadership' interviews. A friend at FB who happens to be a Director asked me to tell them about the expectation of band 7 and check whether they are fine. In addition, they also said, there is nothing wrong in asking for it. Another friend who is a PM at FB still regrets not having set the job level expectation. Have I jumped the gun here by setting out my expectation?

  • your written comms here, and the questions you asked scream L4.

    you don't negotiate level.

    • you are welcome. sounds like you needed that reality check.

'setting expectations that I want L7 because I googled it, and that's what my YoE maps to' -> Strong pass.

'I lead the product team of X people with $X revenue. Interested in product leadership positions you have available.' -> Kewl, here are some options.

I don't think they will ghost you; they might still loop you in for something aligned with your actual level. simply follow up with the rec again.

Indeed my friend- your reply was the wake up call I needed :)

On another note, I did email the recruiter explaining my past accomplishments, $ order of impact, mgmt experience, etc when asking for level. They replied just now actually. Did not specifically address that leveling query though. So, not sure if they are actually on the same page to begin with. Anyhow, I will let this be for now. Appreciate the response.

I just went through this process. They level based on your interview performance. The person giving the final level is the person you will have the leadership interview with. There's no negotiating levels from my understanding, but I've seen people here on Blind talk about it happening before. I'm in the middle of negotiations so hopefully, you can negotiate the levels :).

Great to know and wish you well in the process. I will probably circle back to the recruiter after phone screen to make sure they hear me in terms of the leveling expectation before going in. Maybe a little premature at this stage. Keep us posted and thanks for sharing!
