Is my pay terrible?

I work as a software developer at ford well its through a consulting agency. I was a new grad and it was in the middle of the pandemic when I got hired. Mind you I put out over 300+ applications (even got my resume looked over from my university) so I was desperate for anything (although I did not convey I was desperate).

My compensation is $50k before taxes, 401k but no matching, no paid time off, decent health care, no holiday pay, no stock or bonuses, and I do not get paid for any sick days I take.

Few things to note I live in Michigan so cost of living is very low and I had 0 years of experience and no internships when I got hired in. It has been 2 years since working here with no raises or promotions. I asked after the 1 year mark if I could get a performance review and they said due to the pandemic they cannot really do that because everyone is working remote so once we get into the office we can do performance reviews. Also no I am not useless in the job I contribute and push out features in a timely manner. #software #swe #engineering #tc

TC: $50k

TC is horrible for US regardless of the location. You got your experience, time to study up and move on.

I think non-SWE non-technical degrees with 0 YOE make more than you. Start leetcode and apply everywhere. Remote friendly is a thing now. Good luck!

Whoa this is gold advice. I am planning on moving to the Los Angelos area next year so I will be looking for jobs out there. I’ll try leet code premium. Do you recommend algo experts or nah?

I would just start with leetcode and supplement it with books, there are many intro to algo books online for free. https://edutechlearners.com/download/Introduction_to_algorithms-3rd%20Edition.pdf this is a great book, you can choose to skip over the proofs because some are long and tedious to understand without someone explaining it to you. Just learn the DS and algorithms and use this book as a supplement to your leetcode DS algo topics. It’s a long book, but skip the long proofs unless you want to know all of it.

  • You are just starting your career. Keep learning and growing and looking for your next step and you'll multiply your comp several times. I started at 35k and now make 10x

That’s true to an extent, but you’re being paid far below market rate. The good news is that it’s very early in your career, you’ve gained some valuable experience, and you stand to 2-3x your income in your next role
