I recently gave notice to my current employer, and I am surprised that my manager and VP are all trying to get me to stay. The counter offer is move to different team, but still within same VP. Their reason is they think I'm performing pretty well.

The main reason for my current job change is not comp. related, but rather I feel there aren't enough impact and I'm not learning enough. I have been with the current employer for some time now, and I really don't think switching internally looks good on my personal brand (as I already made an internal switch in the past year).

Taking money out of the question, would you ever consider the counter offer seriously?
Moving to a new employer would mean building new trust and more uncertainty.
But honestly, I just feel my personal brand is not ideal within the current company (as I have been somewhat slacking), and just feel like starting over would make myself a lot more motivated.

Please keep discussions objective and serious comments only. Thank you so much

EDIT: I would like to take TC out of the question as it is hard to estimate, with certainty, because stock prices can go up and down and are not predictable.

  • Move on.
Don't look back once you resigned.
Resignation should be your option only when you think things are not working for you.

Def start over. I'm in the same boat: slacking, unmotivated, too comfortable. I'm looking to jump soon!

      thank you as well!

Yeah I'm just really surprised that current management wants me to stay. This is not just the standard "we promise you xyz", but actually moving internally (laterally). I'm just trying to think why they would want to do that. TBH, I dont think I'm performing that well. But apparently, they think otherwise.

Seems like a good situation to be in, but when it really happens, still confusing

If the company you're switching to has more exciting work to offer you should probably leave. Also, I agree with starting over gets people motivated and change is required once in a while. Weigh other pros and cons which you've not put up here like TC, Designation, Brand value, Location etc.

      Thank you for the response.

I think at this point, even if the counter offer to stay is as "good" as leaving, we should generally still choose to leave. Not leaving would mean tarnishing the rep with the new prospective employer, and there is no telling how the current management will see me.

Staying never seems to work out. You end up staying for money or other promises but youโ€™ll still be thinking about going elsewhere. Youโ€™ll make much more money by leaving and your career growth.

Ask yourself: will I learn more spending another year here or would I grow more and learn more going elsewhere.

Your bosses are panicking because theyโ€™re probably realizing they should have tried harder to keep you happy. They need to learn a lesson ๐Ÿ˜‚ donโ€™t let them guilt you into staying. If itโ€™s a better opportunity they should be happy or you, even if it is their job to retain you.
