Some are saying the manifesto is an attack on women and that Google is right in firing its author. Others are calling it an attack on free speech. What do you think?

Most men are unfit for tech. You could write an equivalent scientific article explaining male sex traits and why they make people unfit for tech.

    That's reality.

It's single digits of the population who are wired for this kind of work.

I have no idea whether it's more men or more women but we are ALL statistical anomalies.

Is he right that the average woman isn't a good for in this industry? Yes.

But same is true of the average man.

It's completely wrong to look at average traits to decide who is the best fit for an industry that selects decidedly non average people.

  • The author could no longer be effective and needed to be fired. If he had addressed his article to a scientific journal, you probably would have seen a different response. This is clearly him misjudging his audience. Words matter, and irrespective of his intent, his words have created an issue for Google that needs to be solved. Google does need to address some of the things he raised, but they can only do that after he is gone

he is fired because he made Google look stupid. if you think firing him is bad, imagine keeping him and having to deal with the conflicts and hostilities and PR nightmare afterwards.

Google make Google look bad. He should have been debated in fireside chat by people with more data and the reasons for the policy decisions made public and defended, not fired.

Everybody gets that there are no right answers, and that decisions are made on imperfect information.

    • Why don't they just send out a poll to all the guys straight up asking if they think there female coworkers are incompetent?

Then they can go after the Indians or something.

  • Regardless of the memo's contents, the situation was a PR clusterfuck and Google did what was necessary from a business standpoint.

That said, I consider them morally bankrupt along with the shitstorm media that grossly misrepresented the memo's contents for purposes of click bait.

Btw, I'm not a conservative and I don't fully agree with the memo's contents. I've just read enough books on evolutionary psychology and philosophy of science to respect other people's opinions when they are presented in a respectful and coherent manner.

Although I voted yes, I think they did a lot of wrong things that led them to the point of firing him being the least worst option.
