Top tier STEM undergrad / Oxbridge STEM Masters completion expected this year. 2.5 years in Data/Analytics in a tech firm and then 3 years as a Data Engineer at FAANG. Interviewed for Data Engineer (Associate 1) which says 3-5 years experience on the spec. Seems like a middle office team. > Shouldn’t I be Associate 2 level? What TC can I expect? > Is it easy to move internally to FO after my Masters? Easy to move up quickly if you prove yourself valuable in the team? > The tech stack seems like SQL/Spark/Python... but how does this work without Cloud (AWS/GCP etc)?
Do you know the team or division in which you'll be working? That will dictate if you will work with an already implemented AWS/GCP or not. Easy way to move up quickly will depend on your boss and team. Also, did you ask about signing bonus? You know that if you get an offer from another company GS would probably match (unless you have already signed of course).
Yes - it’s marketing/communications. They don’t have AWS/GCP implemented according to the hiring manager. I’m speaking to the tech person for more details this week. They just mentioned Spark/SQL etc so I’m guessing there is a way to execute this. It seems like a growing team and I would be the one heading up the data side of things so it seems like if I get things right moving up should be good. Once the data is sorted it will be more analytics and customer facing work which is more interesting to me than my current role at Amazon. The issue is I don’t see similar roles for my level / skill set at a competitor bank at the moment in London. I think GS also had like 1 million interviews which I’m not keen on haha (and HackerRank year which I am refreshing on at the moment so not fully prepared).
Try to get the name of the team. If that name is on the news then you're all set. If it isn't, don't panic, you can always do mobility (keep in mind that you might have to interview again to do so).
The role seems very cool and aligned. I guess I was just a bit blind on the tech side so didn’t want to get into something that I didn’t fully understand. :)
Yes, think you might be around 200 TC No. The only real front office role that's still tech focused is systematic trading. It's a maintenance nightmare, have fun
200 TC USD? Or GBP? Could I move internally to other teams using my tech skills post-Masters? Or to other financial firms for technical roles? I’m not FO obsessed, I just want good progression and comp if I work hard. Can you expand on what you mean? Are there Linux servers (like EC2) with everything installed on it?
USD for NYC GS HQ, London pay is lower. There's no such thing as a front office dev outside systematic trading. They told me I would be "front office" but the definition of front office is revenue generating. No IC dev gets paid particularly well here. You asked how the stack works without cloud, my answer is it's a maintenance nightmare. At GS we have internal resource allocation that's extremely cumbersome to use.
