In November 2018, I received a promotion. However, the company delayed the raise from November to Aug 1st, 2019 with a "discretionary" bonus equal to the amount that I would have made at the new pay level from Nov to July 31 2019 paid on July 31st 2019. The reasoning given by the CEO was that series D fundraising was holding up raises. The bonus was contingent on continued employment and (surprise) they terminated me in mid April (no reason given after 6+ years of exceeding numbers & expectations). Is the consensus that I got screwed or that I should talk to an attorney?
Yes you did, unless you got detailed terms in writing specifying any exceptions including company terminations, to this continuous employment condition for the bonus.
Sounds like I'll have to settle for glaring at them when we're at the same conference.
What a chump. Who gives a shit about your problems if you won't even help the next guy avoid the same mistake you made?
You got screwed, but not blatantly enough to prove it in court, IMO. Welcome to the real world.
Yikes. Name and shame!
Not my style.
Then u deserve it.
in the future, for something like this, always get it in writing that if you are part of a RIF or otherwise terminated without cause they owe you the bonus.
Looks like they got you to work harder for the same money. Are you in the US at an out will state?
Yes, US at will (California).
