Had a phone interview today (non-FAANG which BTW they stole Amazon's LPs & interview process & posed it as their own) & it went great. At the end of the interview the recruiter asked for my salary requirement and I said $175k. Then she asked is that TC or base & me being stupid enough said TC and she said we could work that out. My current TC is $135k (all base; no deductions other than tax). The company is not public so no RSUs. I'm guessing their TC is only base & bonus. How badly did I screw myself? Trolls go ahead and š at me all you want I'm sure I deserve it. I was thinking about telling them I have an offer for $190k & see if they'll counter. TBH not super excited to work for them anyways so even if they say no I won't be too heartbroken but for future how should I negotiate salary when the recruiter won't give a range and will push for me to tell mine? Position: TPM (Program) Location: LA
You landed at the wrong foot when you are just beginning negotiations... but on the positive side itās still an increase in TC.
Just donāt answer expected tc
Don't sweat it. Get a competing offer, that is the easiest fix, and next time avoid that question with a non answer like "I just want a competitive pay with the usual 20-30% bump, not looking for something outrageous like 500k". If that doesn't work make up a story about how your current employer is willing to match/exceed offer (may only work once)
Thank you! I'll be sure to try that. In the past I've said something like: I'm looking for $190k since my current salary is $175 so I want something more, even though they're not supposed to ask for my current salary and it has worked. This way they know I won't go under $175k.
Remember if a company pays you lower than everyone at that level - at some point they will have issues , because the midpoint will drag down and it would be unfair . So I remember someone who asked me X$ and we were hiring her for L61 and she is from East coast , she was moving to Redmond . We at Microsoft gave her 2 times of what she asked for , because that was the midpoint at that level . So āgoodā companies are fair and donāt care about what you are making or what you ask for , when low, they will give you the midpoint which is the fair option.
Thank you very much! However, I feel your statement is true for FAANG & other big companies but not everyone else. Smaller companies don't go by that standard. They try to low ball you until they get big enough that they can't get away with it

You are going to be unhappy if you keep reading blind. I'd suggest deleting this thread and moving on with life.. life > tc
