Did I make a mistake Google L5 v MSFT 65?

Feb 2 7 Comments

Chose MSFT because their offer was higher (425k versus 375k) and because I felt I could jump to staff somewhere else easier with the title.

MSFT was paying a higher salary and google had more on hire RSUs. I kind of figured the market would correct and the 600k sign on would be less over the next few years. Refreshers would likely mean google would pay more in the long run. Since the target 65 refresher at MSFT is 45k (pathetic)

However, after today, I’m pretty sure googles offer would have been way better since MSFT is down like 12% and google is up from when I would have joined.

What should I have picked?

  • Relax, stock prices for all companies fluctuate over the course of 4 years. 6 months from now you’ll be celebrating and thinking you’re a genius, and 6 months after that you’re going to feel like a dumbass again. Don’t think about the what-it’s, just enjoy your job. You’re well compensated either way.

    • Was remote for MSFT tier 3

MSFT was 185 (20% target bonus) 700k stock over 4 years and 100k cash bonus first year. They said that was absolute max they could do

Google was 150k base (15% bonus). 600k stock (35% first two years) 80k cash first year

Had offers from Amazon and Meta but didn’t want to work there

What's the point of thinking what you should've done, it's not actionable, you can't use this experience to make better decisions in the future. It only looks like a bad decision now in hindsight but you were and always will be making decisions on data you have at that moment.

Don't go around digging old graves, it only makes you miserable.
