Did you ever get imposter syndrome? How do you deal with it?

Sep 8, 2021 13 Comments

The question is how to deal with imposter syndrome?

I got my salary more than 3 times. Start to feel weird.

How the work at Google and amazon different from other company?

In total I was always top performant but still needed help from others when I get stuck in fixing some bugs or adding new feature.

Current compensation: 110k, location Canada
TC offer: 335k, location California

Appreciate any advice

Never understood imposter syndrome. The person applies to the job, does the interview loop, gets the job. Brags on social. Then somewhere after all the gloating and high fiving about getting their dream job and deserving it they don’t belong and crumble under the weight of not being able to execute a role they targeted to begin with. Not to mention the act of affirmation itself in the form of an approval chain agreeing to the hire sometimes by multiple committees. Maybe I’m missing something.

Yeah i agree with that, but imposter syndrome doesn’t mean you aren’t stepping up to the plate, it’s more like the constant anxiety of i need to be working 10x harder learning 10x more things or i won’t be performing like other people.

In my opinion it has to do with the fact that we usually see only the smartest people being talked about which is like 0.0001% of people but it makes you feel like the average person is that smart. This can cause anxiety and feeling like at any moment you may not be as good as average and make you feel like you need to put in more effort even if you already put in a lot of effort.

Just like other forms of anxiety it’s simple to say “just stop feeling like that because of xyz” but sometimes it’s not so easy even though you know that you’re a top performer / probably above average, specially if you care that much or are in a tier 1/tier 2 company.

OP you should probably just go to therapy and work it out

    • Thanks, I got your point!
      No need for therapy
I was just trying to see what is the expectation and if that is much higher than my other projects

  • 1. You’ll see other people clearly less capable than you making the same or more money. Not suggesting you look down on ppl, but that you have to adapt to a new normal in terms of pay.
    2. When you’re feeling strong anxiety the best way to fix it is to focus on work. No point in feeding the thoughts. The thoughts are not helpful/purely mental debris. Ignore it and get some work done. Accomplishing something will make you feel better.
    3. Even though you have to normalize the pay in your own mind (become desensitized to it) don’t let it go to your head. Remember you are in a bubble of highly privileged people.

    Good luck 👍🏻

  • Be a part of the system long enough and it should get better with time. Delivering something valuable should definitely make things better faster and then slowly integrating into the matrix will eliminate the syndrome.
