Did you make jokes in a FAANG interview and get an offer?

As an interviewer, have you ever given negative feedback about a candidate because he made a joke? What about on the other side of the table, did you make jokes and get an offer? It seems like companies such as Databricks are very serious and interviewers arent comfortable with personal questions or jokes. I wouldnt want to be in a team where all interaction is serious and everyone is a snowflake that cant take a joke. I dont want the extreme either. I worked at a company in the east coast where every meeting would derail into a circus show or stand up comedy. It was like having Peter Griffin, Quagmire, and Tosh.0 in the same room. Grown men would bring fake plastic poo to work as a prop, print out your story, put the poo on top, and say the pm took a dump all over it. The rubric for sizing stories was either a golden ticket, oompa loompa, or chocolate factory. There was a team slide deck for sprint demos and people would mess with each others slides, adding hilarious content right before the presentation. The person presenting would get to their slide and be caught completely off guard. Sexual jokes and innuendos never stopped. It was that bad. One time a girl joined the team and quit within two weeks. HR turned a blind eye to it of course.

I think it is a high wall but once you’re inside people are ~somewhat~ more chill

Fully depends on team culture. You are interviewing them too. If they are bunch of robotic workers which is not your style then it's not a good fit

Jokes will not help or harm your case

One candidate made a sexual joke. Yes, it affected my recommendation negatively.

I don’t mind jokes, but: 1. If you’re not a native English speaker, be careful 2. Steer clear of things like politics, social causes, religious, sexual, etc topics. Dangerous territory

Sadly, my team made jokes about these topics every day. You can get away with anything in Florida.

Ya, obviously. The difference is that a prospective candidate should not assume everyone is capable of joking without being offended. Tech is notorious for “safe” spaces, so it’s probably not a good idea to joke about anything even remotely controversial until you know people better.

Sounds like a snowflake. One time my friend joked around with a coworker saying his shirt looked like a girls size, and the dude complained to HR.

Is this copypasta, like the guy complaining he was thrown out of a lecture for eating breakfast, and then proceeds to describe how he was making pancakes on a griddle in class?

No, I wish I was making it up

I almost jokingly used "excrement" as the opposite of "increment" but stopped myself.

Apple butterss OP Aug 24, 2019

context? It’s a shame people can’t express themselves anymore without fear of being penalized.

I did say excrement once in an interview. I was trying to say extra increment and I missed the two words together... Interviewer and I had a good laugh, though.
