Considering accepting an offer with FB but not yet sold. Wondering what the biggest differences people who have moved between the two companies (either direction) have noticed. For reference, I feel good about Uber overall, both in terms of my role / potential growth and the company as a whole.
If you feel good about Uber why make a change. There is always some unknown risk. FB wlb and fire culture makes it a bigger risk.
Wlb = work like balance. Or, to put it simply, you will be expected to put in a lot of hours to just survive. FB fire culture is well documented on Blind.
Not as bad as FB. Wlb improved a lot over the last year. FB wlb has gotten worse. They have a toxic culture that they put sprinkles on top of.
Über will be a good choice over FB... Dara effect ;-)
Feeling good at Uber but wanted to switch? Sounds like a money issue, am I right?
Nailed it. And leveling. FB offering better for both
I have worked at both. I would never swap Uber for FB.
Can you elaborate?
FB work is part of a machine. At uber I can do meaningful work that has direct impact. I also found people managed upwards to FB and wanted to be seen as what their manager wanted to see. It was political
Expect a lot harder to get promoted at FB. You need to show impact to get to the next level - but here’s the thing, everyone is chasing that impact. At Uber, it’s a lot easier to make impact and we’re also less impact-obsessed. The people I know that did well at FB we’re people who joined new teams early (eg first 10 engineers in Messenger or first 30 engineers at FB London). For others, it’s a hit & miss. For me, I like having more space to make an impact.
Super useful, thanks
Ask around the office, tons of ex-Facebookers are now at Uber.
