Blinders please help think about this.
I have an interview for dir of pmm with a unicorn startup I’m L64 pmm now at microsoft.
I also have an interview for a pm role internally because I’ve been thinking of shifting to pm and finally found a hiring manager who is looking for a person with business skills to define the product and market and can ramp up in technical. I could grow to principal and then move to dir of product elsewhere.
Pm is attractive because I want to do product strategy and the work of a cpo is more attractive than a cmos work to me. But I have also enjoyed pmm work talking to customers, market research, sales and gtm strategy, presenting at conferences etc
With growth that I can get immediately in smaller companies in product marketing and ability to move up into leadership I’m wondering if I am shooting myself in the foot getting into product management and ramping up there for a few years. Also if I take the pm role and I want to get out of ms, what’s my next next role. Can it be leading a pm team?
Do you have experience with this situation? Where would either decision fall in terms of 1) growth and leadership 2)prestige and decision making for company strategy or product strategy 3)compensation
