I'm an EM (M1) at FB. A recruiter at Walmart has been reaching out for a director role at Walmart. I don't know anyone who works there. The only reason I'm considering this is due to the title/scope at Walmart. I don't see scope for M2 in near term. Curious to know TC at Walmart for director role and culture Current TC 450k
I saw a IC at FB that makes $500k with 6 yoe, you’re making $450k? This bs isn’t adding up 🤣
Managers don't necessarily make more than engineers all the time
He’s an EM!
I understand. Probably different in Apple but they don't have to make more. You might be EM managing L7 IC.
Op what’s your yoe?
Excellent opportunity in terms of scale and complexity of business. Their platform supports world’s largest business. Culture is very political. Too many people/teams chasing many overlapping projects. If you plan to rest and vest, this is a great company. If you get excited and try to really build something different, you will be crushed under bureaucracy.
Sounds similar to Workday lol.
Amazing, I couldn't word it better myself.
Director is X7 at Walmart. Here are the ballpark numbers. Base ~250K, Bonus 30%, RSU 120K per year (4 year vesting). On paper it will seem like 445 K per year. For the first year, you can add a joining bonus of around 100K, and consider only 25% of your RSU new hire grant. So first year TC will be ~455K. Frankly it's not enough for a FB to Walmart Labs move, though you will be surprised at the quality of engineering talent here.
Surprised in a good or bad way ;)
In a good way 😀
It all depends on your team. Not on company. Walmart have some excellent implementations and contributed to lot of open source projects as well. I would recommend to find all team details and decide based on that. regarding salaries; range is as mentioned in above post. But ask for more bonus. I heard 250K sign on bonus at Walmart for three years from an Amazon resource.
Ask for senior director. Dont move for director. You have more options than walmart
What's your upside in FB ,if you stayed for another 2-4 years? WM vis a vis FB, I see a huge potential upside for WM. I guess time for you to stop looking at TC and think long-term if you are willing to pursue management.
It’d have to be minimum $1M/yr for me to consider living in Bentonville, AR if that’s where the job’s at. (Having visited there a couple of times).
Why?
Lol. Directors in Bentonville don't make as much as his current TC.
Technology wise, moving from FB to WL would be a step down. If you prefer working for a higher title over technology, you can consider moving. Also, I do not think WL would offer much better than 450k for a director role.
