My partner got a offer from a Yahoo owned company. When they asked for current salary, he inflated the numbers (though modestly) for leverage in salary negotiation. Everything passed but they asked for a recent pay stub for proof of salary as a last step. Is this legal? And was it wrong to fudge the numbers? What could have been done differently.
Not legal in California. Not a good idea to provide fake numbers. You can probably wiggle your way out of it by saying the number you gave was TC, including the value of benefits, etc.
Should have photoshopped something.
I can’t believe people are saying “he should have not lied” gtfo , this is a shit company that is doing a shit practice nothing more.
I think it is a common practice to ask for payslip during background verification.
Never have that experience myself. Add sample size +1
Only to verify that they’ve worked there. If you’re asked this and have salary concerns, start redacting. They just need your name, company name, and date. Anything more and you can tell them to pound sand (if you’re in CA at least)
Asking for paystubs is illegal in CA. Time to sue
Illegal in NY too.
If you’re in California, they can’t ask that and your partner doesn’t have to answer it. They certainly can’t demand proof. Your partner should respectfully decline. Recruiters under Yahoo should know better, you should be suspicious of them asking for that in the first place.

Are we ready to buy our forever home?
Yes it was wrong. Telling the truth could have been done. Yahoo doesn’t exist anymore, it’s Verizon Media.
This was a while ago. He ended up telling the truth and got banned from applying again! It seemed wrong to ask for a pay stub though. Is it common in the industry?
Totally common. You’re busted lying, that’s how it goes.
