Hi Blind community, Started a job less than 8 months ago, it was not at all what was described to me. New position but dealing with many negatives and few of the positives that were what drew me out here. Basically inherited a big ol' poop pile. Manager told me I could start in this position to develop group with my past experience then change groups after 6 months. He left my group two weeks after I started...Have no one advocating for me now and they've conveniently forgotten his word to me. Lesson learned, I will get anything like that in writing next time! It was/still is a very toxic work environment. Lots of politicking in department. Getting to point where thinking of quitting with nothing lined up. To evaluate my life, next steps. Forced into taking a substantial relocation package, very little of which was actual money. The value of my possessions was on par or less than the shipping cost to Bay. Two year payback period. Don't really trust HR and pretty early in new job to ask for transfer. Thoughts?
Amen, that's why I mentioned I will just leave if it is too bad but looking for other options.
No amount of money is worth a hell job. A rule I've lived by.
I have joined in a similar timeline and I am already in market .. Life is too good to waste of shithole Move on
Honestly yeah, if it's not the right fit (mgmt/project is a big ol pile of poo). Start looking, but rage quitting is never the amswer. Just force a smile, do your job but stop putting yourself out there for others. And move on. This is essentially the same as not giving any fucks and letting others idiocracy fuck themselves without breaking any rules. Heck if you want to drive points home, take the rules too literally since no one manages for the error in communication. Tldr, start looking for a new job, do _exactly_ as told, stop promoting yourself to help out.
Microsoft sucks. Get out.
Politics are people's way of coping with a bad work culture which recursively creates bad employees all the way from the top. I never look to blame an employee or manager, I always blame the culture. I felt the same way as you at Amazon my first 8 months I was there and Apple my first week I was there. But I found my niche (area I could carve out and be a rock star in), and focused only on that. Eventually I became a team staple and earned the trust of others, then it was a different experience. When you're not the rock star it feels a lot like you describe it. When you become the rock star, problems go away substantially. The hardest part is the first 9-12 months before the effort reduces to muscle memory on everyday tasks. Your actual over achievements can then start to shine, particularly as confidence in yourself and others' confidence in you becomes maximized. If you never find that vibe, coast for a while and then get fired or study up after work and before work for a new job offer. Tesla employees are in high demand right now and Apple and other places would love to snipe them so you are in a great position. All the best to you.
Same boat as you my friend good luck, I'm actively interviewing and I've only been here for a month..bait and switch are the worst and it will just lead to high turnover and wasted onboarding effort
MOVE MOVE MOVE MOVE!
Yea i am having the same issue.
Read your relocation and hiring docs carefully. What is the payback schedule? What if you get fired vs quit? What do you think if you went to HR and tried to get the relo payback waived if you quit after explaining all of this stuff? Just some things to think about. Sorry to hear you are in a jam.
Thanks for thoughtful response- I'm actually curious about the fire vs. quit. Letter mentions voluntary leave. Not sure what is covered under that umbrella. Relocation is prorated by days so wouldn't be complete loss. I'm hoping HR would want to retain a motivated employee and be willing to work something out. Main concern is them saying something to my management.
HR should be safe. Just set up a 1:1 with your HR business partner (or whoever you interact with from HR) and say that it is confidential. Then be open and honest.
