What work does a distributed Systems backed engineer do ? Is it like receiving data over network and sending it to drives or database apps ?
I am currently working as a embedded software engineer in storage (non cloud). I am aiming to move one level up in the stack and work on backend applications in cloud. Need some info/guidance to make the move.
What programming languages are mainly used ?

I am not a distributed systems engineer, so this might not be 100% accurate. A lot of people claim to be distributed systems engineer, but they really build on top of them using things like Kubernetes, Kafka & Cassandra as tools. Real distributed systems engineers are the folks who build things like Kubernetes & Kafka. Honestly the field involves a wide range of topics. Network programming is one, tinkering with OS & disk I/O is another. Fault detection & tolerance, different modes of consistency, distributed transactions, clock synchronization, consensus protocols, leader election & cluster management- there's too many things to cover. Day to day work varies accordingly.

Heard that analogy about neurologist/radiologist vs other doctors. Beyond a point few extra $$ won't make tangible difference to me.. I could be odd one out on this though. If I know I have strong knowledge but not a huge difference in pay, it might still make me happy, nurses my ego :)

Generally true everywhere, makers make more money than users.

You make a service that gets data in one format, map it to another format and then call one or more other services with that data and then map the response(s) back to the first service.
