I think I had my first encounter with one in software engineering instead of product management Are Diversity Hires a real thing or am I a racist for thinking that? Have you also had an experience that made it clear that person was a diversity hire? #swe #software #engineering #facebook #Google #Amazon #twitter #Uber #lyft
Weak hire or diversity hire
You are a racist for thinking that!
Diversity in hiring is supposed to mean that efforts are made to ensure that diverse candidates apply for jobs that they might be good at. It's not supposed to involve lowering the hiring bar. I don't know how all this is implemented at VMWare, but I think you should give your colleagues in hiring and engineering the benefit of the doubt.
It didn’t occur at VMware
Yes, but there is also OKRs and publicity that comes with it. I was listening to Google's X Moonshot leader. Straight away this feminist interviewer asks why aren't you hiring more women? Now, the dude, who is probably one of the smartest person is pressured to promote and hire more women/black to overcome guilt, SJW pressure. If you think that has no effect on downstream hiring, you are too naive So, you are pressured to increase your quota. Humans are irrational decision makers.
You’re implying that minorities have no right to be bad hires or even mediocre hires (which is the majority of people, including you with a high level probability)
Very very good point minus that last part
^^ This. If you're part of the majority group and you do / say something stupid, it usually gets brushed off. If you're part of a minority group, and you do / say something stupid, it suddenly confirms everyone's bias. Clearly you are a "diversity hire" who isn't qualified. There is a lot more pressure for people from under-represented groups to perform well, and never make a mistake, since everyone is watching.
Have we ever forbidden “diversity” from submitting resumes or have recruiters purposely diverted interview opportunities to other non-“diversity”?
It is real, and very disgraceful.
real
Could you be specific about what made them a diversity hire? :)
FWIW, in general terms, as I see it, diversity/inclusion/equity (aka, DIE) is our era's Jim Crow, including the future cringe. In specific terms (to my team), and we interview those who will work with us, the hiring bar is not lowered. After the hire/no hire decision is made, interviewers can see the rating and notes of other interviewers, so any sort of funny business would (I hope) result in an uproar.
Care to elaborate??
