Ok troll away but could use serious answers also🤔 I’ve been working remotely for quite a while so didn’t have to concern myself about this but... Will I be setting myself up for failure by dressing nicely as a SWE at a FAANG company (outside the US)? I don’t mean suits. Just something more stylish than the usual jeans/beige shorts + t-shirt. Maybe a nice shirt+sweater+tie+jeans etc. Or should I go back to my university days and embrace the hoodie again? Edit: to make it clear, don’t want to impress anyone. In the past I just came across “well dressed == bad engineer” opinions and wondering if it’s the same at FAANG.
Only to impress girls
Generally, unless you're non-eng or in higher leadership then most people are pretty casual. Are you going to impress your colleague by dressing up more nicely? Probably not all that much, unless they're romantically interested in you and like your done up style. Impressing folks is much simpler to do by doing work and not being an asshole.
Actually I’m more interested in negative bias than impressing my coworkers. I dress for myself, not to bypass any shortcomings. At one previous, non-FAANG, company a coworker straight up told me they thought I will not fit in and do poor work b/c of how I dress. Had to unleash my inner alpha nerd on him.
Haha I've had similar experiences in the past. On two occasions it was in non tech and I ignored them. Eventually, they kept sharing their dumbass logic and I shocked them by dipping out without notice. It was great because they went about trying to shame me for not giving notice. I laughed it off as I walked out. I ended up getting some great consulting work from them for almost a year as I knew their oddly proprietary tech stack and they needed continuous support on it until I was able to help them hire a replacement.
I wonder if there’s a subconscious negative bias on someone dressed in a suit.
That’s my limited experience, hence the question.
There definitely is.
I got the most drip on here, no debatin
What? FAANG is just like any other company except that they allowed casual dress. Dress however you’d like. If you get judged for it, that’s the persons problem and isn’t based on the company.
I like to wear nice shirts as well and yea you get looks and comments that show that people may not be 100% comfortable with you. It depends heavily on location though. New York was obviously way better for this, then SF or LA maybe then I guess South Bay
Dress however you like. But I have to admit suit and tie will be weird. I don’t think well dressed eng will be seen as bad eng.... May be just Different.... but I don’t think wearing nice clothes will shape people’s opinion about your work
Just dress how your CEO dresses. Can't go wrong with that strategy.
Jeans and tshirt look has a range too. You can look polished in right fit/color. Shoes make or break the outfit. Please don’t wear shorts to work. Or open toe shoes.
Why can’t I wear shorts?
