I have 10 yoe in one company. Currently working as full stack developer working on Angular + Java, Spring. I can design and implement web application. I can learn new programming language or tech stack easily. I don't have experience with latest tech like Spark or Big data or ML or Open Source Software projects. I was laid off recently and my last date is July 2020. I am doing leetcode, preparing system design. If I apply to FAANG, is my experience and background enough? or Should I learn these new tools, tech stack, build projects and then apply? Or Doing leetcode and system design with complete knowledge of current project is enough for FAANG or tier 2/3 companies.
Having those new tech stack keywords will make your resume have a higher chance to pass thru the recruiter screen, because they’re usually pretty clueless about tech stuff and only mentally pattern match based on keywords. In the actual engineering interview, not having experience with the latest tech stack is fine, but not being able to solve the whiteboard questions is not fine.
Got it. But should we just put tech stack keywords even if I haven't used them in any of the projects. I am not sure how to justify, if I have not used stack in project. I feel like, If I lie, someone will catch and that will be big red flag.
Yes definitely don’t lie because they will ask you at least a brief question if you claim you know some tech stack on your resume
You won’t know until you apply...
You probably came here for self confirmation, otherwise you wouldn’t have posted this. Yes you have a chance. Work on your self confidence.
Thanks Atinday. You got it right. As our entire office is closing, the thing is everyone is giving various opinions like do Big Data or Do AI or ML or Cloud certifications. I am not sure if that will add any value. Atleast for now as I will not have sufficient experience with those things. So I am confirming If I have any chance with existing tech stack I know.
Are you that much better comparing to your colleagues with similar yoe? I’d start with non faang interviews. If you nail most of them your chance is decent. Learning system design by studying is probably not the best way to learn. It’s easy to spot when candidates don’t have hands on experience with that.
I have good amount of experience with scalable system design. I am just going through material to make it better and understand new things. Will start interviewing next month with non FAANG companies.
FANG gives everyone a chance. I don't think your experience matters at all, they literally asked about it for 10 seconds. Just leetcode all day
Eh, that's not true. But OP stands a chance based on his description.
Ohhh thanks. So FAANG people also use same stack or may be dont mind if I can learn new things. @vtHy57 Yes. Leetcode daily, anyway I am laid off so I have lot of time.
