Do all hedge funds prefer c++ devs over Java devs?

Or they focus more on cs fundamentals with the assumption that a specific programming language if needed can be learnt?

What about rust?

Go to your company’s trading floor and ask if anyone knows Rust.

The overhead of the JVM makes it a pretty tough sell when counting milliseconds. (Even though this can be mitigated in some conditions, the perception remains). My friends use C++ and for the main rails will even look to assembler. But there’s a whole world of Python and other high level languages used for asynchronous number crunching and simulations. I’d probably look to that kind of thing- most people aren’t going to let anyone but close confidantes touch the sensitive bits that actually deliver the trade calls..

You need to be smart to understand pointers and hedge funds want smart people

Doesn’t Jane street use OCaml?

I'll take "what is worse than c++" for 300, Alex.

What are they then?

Not a hedge fund, but IMC is a java shop

Two Sigma kabobs Nov 13, 2019

Two sigma is a java shop as well, except specific teams with low latency requirements.

Jump Trading ELlX82 Nov 14, 2019

IMC also uses c++ in latency critical areas

If you think of yourself as ${language} dev, that's not great.

Goldman Sachs JQKq20 OP Nov 14, 2019

No. That's why I asked this question.

You mean a #{language} dev

Citadel Securities xRuK54 Nov 14, 2019

Really depends what you're working on. More important that you know the right tool for the job than just one language.
