Do people outside the industry know how high the pay is?

I feel like software engineering is widely considered a good career, similar to a mechanical or electrical engineer. But do people really understand that $350k in your mid-20s isn't an unreasonable figure (obviously many caveats and qualifiers to this but you know what I mean)?

I think this a well-kept secret in the industry.
