Do some companies give you instantly redeemable sign-on bonus?

So in my current position I got a "sign-on bonus" which is in stocks and vests over 4 years, with the first vesting period being after the 1st year.
I'm wondering whether this is always the case or whether it's also possible to get "true" sign-on bonus which is either cash or stocks granted right away (or in some reasonable time like maybe after 3 months).

If so, then it's easier to imagine jumping ship as the money you lose in your sign-on bonus which still hasn't vested will be compensated by the sign-on bonus you get at your new role. Otherwise, that extra money would get delayed by like 1 year, which is not cool.

Sounds like RSUs not a sign-on bonus.

I think typically the sign-on is up front, but has to be paid back if you bail within 1 yr.

    • Maybe this "sign-on bonus" (they literally called it that) is only a thing here in Europe.

Thanks for the info, yeah that's what I was hoping for... sounds reasonable to have to return it if you bail within 1 yr.

My FB sign on which was nearly 6 figures was paid to me in my first pay check in whole.

  • Always got them in cash at the start.
Sometimes no strings attached, sometimes had to give back a portion for leaving before 1y

Some companies will give you a cash sign on bonus but as others have pointed out you have to pay a pro-rated share of it back if you leave in first year
